EDI: Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion

EDI stands for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and is a vital part of safeguarding to ensure everyone feels represented. This is for both the workforce and customers, establishing a commitment to foster inclusive environments, whether this be sex and gender, age, race and ethnicity, neurodiversity, socio-economic, as well as LGBTQ+.

The UK Hospitality website works as a voice for those who work in hospitality, to provide expert advise and guidance on issues employees may face in the workplace or through their company. Their mission is to guide the hospitality sector into becoming the most inclusive industry.

It has been found by the International Business Times, that only 3 in 10 customers of the Hospitality industry visit companies with an EDI policy. The industry is a vital part of the UK economy, having been a major player in coming out of the 2008 financial crisis, as well as contributing around £40.4 billion to the economy in 2019. COVID had a huge effect on these businesses however, due to numerous nationwide lockdowns. Although this sector has been through extraordinary pressure these last few years, people see restaurants, bars, cafes and clubs as a space to build community and nurture their personal relationships, and therefore is a pillar for society.
